MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID

The PRTC is sponsoring a  session in Mental Health First Aid :  Adults who Interact with Youth
14 Hours of Instruction; September 29th 2017 and October 13th 2017, 9:00 – 4:30 both days.

A limited number of seats are available for this session.  Costs:  Registration is $150.00, including 14 hours of instruction and Mental Health First Aid Manual, and completion certificate  Register with the PRTC by telephone at 604-822-1364 or inquire at prtc.testlibrary@ubc.ca.  .

Student bursaries are available for students registered full-time in a relevant graduate program.

MHFA Adults who Interact with Youth is intended for an adult audience whose primary focus is youth (aged 14-25). In addition to the four most common disorders discussed in MHFA BASIC, this course includes instruction about eating disorders and deliberate self-injury. Participants who take this course are well prepared to interact confidently about mental health with the young people in their lives, including at schools, extra-curricular activities, social services, family, friends, and communities.

In the MHFA course, you will gain a solid understanding of the 5 basic actions of ALGEE:

Assess the risk of suicide and/or harm
Listen non-judgmentally
Give reassurance
Encourage professional support
Encourage other supports

ALGEE is the framework for having a confident conversation about mental health with family, friends, colleagues, and strangers.

Key Outcomes

International evaluations and feedback have found the following outcomes for participants undertaking an MHFA course:

• Increased awareness of signs and symptoms of the most common mental health problems
• Decreased stigma related to mental health
• Increased confidence interacting with individuals experiencing a mental health problem or crisis
• Increased help actually provided to individuals in crisis or experiencing a mental health problem

Recent Workshops

 ADOS-2 & ADI-R Training Workshops  COMPLETED 

 The Psychoeducational Research and Training Centre (PRTC) at the University of British Columbia collaboratied with the Pacific Family Autism Network and Able Developmental Clinic to sponsor clinical training workshops in ADOS-2 and ADI-R with Dr. Jennifer Olson, a certified ADOS-2 and ADI-R trainer.

 Workshops:

1. May 29 – 30:  a 2-day clinical training workshop on the Autism Diagnostic Interview-Revised (ADI-R).  Instruction and practice in administration and scoring of the ADI-R, including live and video case studies.  Observation of live administration of the ADI-R and consensus coding experience.
2. May 31 – June 1: a 2-day clinical ADOS-2 training providing instruction and practice in administration and scoring of Modules 1-4 of the ADOS-2, including live administrations of the ADOS-2, with participants observing live and video administrations and engaging in consensus coding.
3. June 2:  a 1-day clinical ADOS-2 Toddler Module training providing instruction and practice in administration and scoring of the ADOS-2 Toddler module, with participants observing live and video administrations and engaging in consensus coding.
4. June 3-4: a 2-day clinical ADOS-2 refresher training providing advanced instruction and practice in administration and scoring of the ADOS-2, including live administrations of the ADOS-2, with participants observing live and video administrations and engaging in consensus coding. This workshop is intended for participants who have had instruction and practice with the ADOS-2 and want additional administration and coding training.

 Participants will need to have access to an ADOS-2 Manual and ADI-R Manual for the related workshops.  Participants can order and pay for a personal copy of ADOS-2 manual ($135.00) or ADI-R manual ($82.00)  at the time of registration  (Must be ordered and paid at registration now with delivery at the workshop).

 A limited number of seats are available for each workshop.  Cost was $700.00 per day.  Pre-registration is required for the workshop.  Registration includes workshop, materials, practice protocols & light morning and afternoon refreshments.  Lunch is on your own.

Social Emotional-Learning series

A series of SEL related workshops was offered in the  PRTC in partnership with the Edith Landau Charitable Foundation, The Attias Family Foundation, & The Edward D. and Anna Mitchell Family Foundation sponsored a week of workshops on the topic of social-emotional learning.
